Ein Glas Limonade – A glass of lemonade

Bei diesem Bild war ich hin und her gerissen. Einerseits wollte ich sanfte Pastellfarben, andererseits fiel mir auf, dass dunkle Kontraste fehlten. Ich fand es freundlicher, so wie es ist. Bin nicht sicher, ob es funktioniert.

I was in a bit of a conflict with this painting. On the one hand I wanted a soft, pastel colored look, on the other hand I noticed a lack of contrasting darks. Then I decided to leave it soft and friendly. Not sure it works.

Magenta Clematis

Noch ein Blick in meinen Garten. Die grünen Blätter waren in Wirklichkeit genauso dunkel wie die Blüte. Um den Tonwertkontrast zu erhöhen habe ich sie etwas heller gemalt. Der Farbkontrast zwischen Magenta und hellgrün ist schön kräftig.

Another view of my garden. The green leaves were actually as dark as the flower. I painted them lighter to have some value contrast. The color contrast between the magenta flower and the green is quite strong.

Meine große Tube Titanweiß und zwei Pinsel, mit denen ich eigentlich nicht male. Einer ist ein chinesischer Kalligraphie-Pinsel, der andere ein zerzauster, billiger Borstenpinsel. Beide sind schön verschieden geformt und gut geeignet für ein Stilleben getreu der Kompositions-Regel: keine zwei Dinge sollten gleich sein. Die Streifen dieses runden Tischen unterstützen die Komposition und passen generell gut zu kleinen Stilleben. Sie vermitteln Perspektive und unterstützen die Tiefenwirkung.

My big tube of titanium white oil paint and two brushes I actually do not paint with. One is a Chinese calligraphy brush and the other a shaggy cheap bristle brush. I chose them for this still life because their shapes are so different from each other, according to the composition rule: no two things should be alike. The stripes of this round table form a strong compositional element and go well with small objects for still life. They give a sense of perspective and depth.

Schwarzäugige Susanne – Black-eyed Suzanna

Am späten Nachmittag auf meiner Terrasse. Die Schatten wurden bereits länger. Ich stand im Schatten und es war nur ein einziger breiter Lichtstrahl zu sehen, der von links um die Hausecke herum kam. Eine kletternde Klematis hält sich an der Wand fest, im Blumentopf wachsen hübsche Stiefmütterchen und eine schnellwüchsige schwarzäugige Susanne.

Late afternoon on my terrace. The shadows were already getting longer. I was standing in shadow and there was only one broad shaft of light to be seen around the corner of the house from the left. A Clematis vine clings to the wall, the flower pot has lovely pansies and a fast growing black-eyed Suzanna.

Blaue Gießkanne – Blue watering can

Diese hübsche, handbemalte Gießkanne haben wir vor einigen Jahren auf einem Flohmarkt in der Nähe des italienischen Ortes Barolo gekauft. Darauf sind schöne Muscheln, Schneckenhäuser und Seesterne. Seine cyan-blaue Farbe steht in aufffälligem Kontrast zu den Blumen. Ich habe eine orange Untermalung verwendet, die hier und da durchscheint. Außerdem sehr pastosen Farbauftrag auf den Blüten.

We bought this lovely hand painted watering can at a flee market near Barolo, Italy, some years back. It has beautifully painted shells, conches and starfish on it. Its cyan color stands in striking contrast with the flowers. I used an orange underpainting, which shows through here and there. Also heavy impasto on the flowers.

Wir haben diesen schönen kleinen Glasflacon in einem Ägyptischen Basar gekauft, als wir einen tollen Tauchurlaub am Roten Meer verbrachten. Es ist ein zerbrechliches kleines Glasobjekt mit goldenen Ornamenten. Ich habe es für dieses Gemälde mit warmen Farben umgeben.

We bought this beautiful little glass flacon in an Egyptian bazar, when we spent a great holiday scuba diving in the Red Sea.  It is a delicate little glass object with golden ornaments. I surrounded it with warm colors for this painting.

Während ich die Reflektionen im Glasstöpsel der Karaffe bestaunte beschloss ich, den Effekt noch zu vergrößern, indem ich mehrfarbige Hintergründe wählte.

As I marveled about all the reflections in the stopper on the carafe I decided to enhance them by choosing multicolored backgrounds.

Buch und Likör – Book and liqueur

Je mehr ich Glas male, umso mehr gefällt es mir. All die Reflektionen des Lichts, der umgebenden Wände, des Tisches und sogar des Himmels sind wirklich erstaunlich.

The more I paint glass, the more I like it. All the reflections of light, of the surrounding walls, the table and even sky light are so amazing.

Ein gesundes Frühstück? Ich habe hier eine orange Grundierung verwendet, damit die kalten Blautöne warm schimmern.

A healthy breakfast? I used an orange underpainting here to make the cool blues shimmer with warmth.

Es war ein trüber Tag, die Sonne kam den ganzen Tag nicht zum Vorschein. Auf der Terrasse malend reflektierte trotzdem das Licht in der blau-grünen Glasflasche. Je länger ich sie ansah, umso mehr Farben entdeckte ich, von grün über cyan bis blau.

It was a dull day, the sun didn't come through the clouds all day. Painting on the terrace I caught a glimpse of bright light reflected in the blue glass bottle. The longer I looked at it, the more colors I saw, from green over cyan to blue.

Der rote Schuh – The red shoe

Meine  alten roten Schuhe fallen an den Nähten auseinander, sind aber soo bequem, schwer zu ersetzen. Ich versuche zur Abwechslung mal ein quadratisches Format.

My old red shoes are falling apart at the seams but are soo comfortable, difficult to replace. I am trying a square format for a change.

I wollte gerade ein französisches Ratatouille, ein köstliches Gemüsegericht mit Aubergine, Zucchini und Tomaten zubereiten, als ich plötzlich das Arrangement für mein nächstes Bild vor mir sah.

I was getting ready to prepare French ratatouille, a delicious vegetable dish with eggplant, zucchini and tomatoes, when I suddenly saw the arrangement for my next painting.

Heute im Supermarkt betrachtete ich das Gemüse als sei ich in einer Boutique. Mir gefielen die krummen Stängel der Paprikaschoten.

At the supermarket today I looked at the vegetables as if I was in a boutique. I liked the crooked stems of the bell peppers.

So viele Blumen im Garten zu dieser Jahreszeit, so viel Auswahl an Objekten zum Malen. Ich habe eine ganze Weile gebraucht, um für die gelben Blumen einen passenden Hintergrund zu finden. Schließlich fand ich zwei Leinwände, eine violett, eine magenta, die ich schon mit farbigem Gesso grundiert hatte.

So many flowers out in the garden this time of year, so many choices of painting subjects. It took me quite a while to find a matching background for the yellow flowers. Finally I found two canvases, one violet, one magenta, that I had already primed with a colored gesso.

Holländischer Käse – Dutch cheese

Neulich brachte mein Mann drei dieser köstlichen, handgefertigten Käse mit, die die Holländer "gras kaas" nennen. Man kann sie nur im Frühling und Sommer kaufen, wenn die Kühe draußen frisches Gras fressen (und kein Heu). Auf dem ebenfalls holländischen, rot-weißen Geschirrtuch sind knuffige, altmodische Häuser abgebildet.

Recently my husband brought home three of these delicious, handmade cheeses the Dutch call "gras kaas". They can only be bought in spring and summer when the cows are out grazing fresh grass (and not feeding on hey). The red and white tea towel is also Dutch and shows some cute old fashioned houses.

Heute morgen habe ich einige zum Terrakotta-Tisch im Garten passende blau-weiße Objekte arrangiert. Eine schnelle Studie.

I arranged some blue and white objects to match the terracotta table in the garden this morning. A quick study.

Eine Lilie aus meinem Garten gepflückt. Ich experimentiere zur Zeit mit verschieden gefärbten Untergründen. Dieser hier ist türkis. Ich finde es passt gut zu den Orange-, Gelb- und Rottönen.

A lily plucked from my garden. I am experimenting with different colored grounds. This one is turquoise. I think it matches the oranges, yellows and reds quite nicely.

Der Blick vom Albertweg in Hofheim Richtung Lorsbach. Der Pfad windet sich am Waldrand entlang und gibt schöne Ausblicke frei.

For this study I used a foto I took when walking with my husband along Albertweg in Hofheim am Taunus. The path winds along the slope of a hill and opens to reveal nice panoramic views.
I mixed my acrylic colors with a heavy gel and used a 2 inch brush for most of the time. I dipped the brush successively into the heaps of paint without mixing on the palette, which resulted in texturized, streaky strokes with lots of color variatons. This "surface mixing" is a bit risky, as you never know exactly which result you are going to get. Good thing that acrylics dry so fast, you can cover up your mistakes and get a nice texture at the same time.
